Abstract: A rain cell ratio model is proposed that computes attenuation of the smallest rain cell which represents the maximum rain rate value i.e. the cell size when rainfall rate is exceeded 0.01% of the time, R0.01 and predicts attenuation for other cells as the ratio with this maximum. This model incorporates the dependence of the path factor r on the ellipsoidal path variation of the Fresnel zone at different frequencies. In addition, the inhomogeneity of rainfall is modeled by a rain drop packing density factor. In order to derive the model, two empirical methods that can be used to find rain cell size distribution Dc are presented. Subsequently, attenuation measurements from different climatic zones for terrestrial radio links with frequencies F in the range 7-38 GHz are used to test the proposed model. Prediction results show that the path factor computed from the rain cell ratio technique has improved reliability when compared with other path factor and effective rain rate models, including the current ITU-R 530-15 model of 2013.
Abstract: Economic Load Dispatch (ELD) proves to be a vital optimization process in electric power system for allocating generation amongst various units to compute the cost of generation, the cost of emission involving global warming gases like sulphur dioxide, nitrous oxide and carbon monoxide etc. In this dissertation, we emphasize ramp rate constriction factor based particle swarm optimization (RRCPSO) for analyzing various performance objectives, namely cost of generation, cost of emission, and a dual objective function involving both these objectives through the experimental simulated results. A 6-unit 30 bus IEEE test case system has been utilized for simulating the results involving improved weight factor advanced ramp rate limit constraints for optimizing total cost of generation and emission. This method increases the tendency of particles to venture into the solution space to ameliorate their convergence rates. Earlier works through dispersed PSO (DPSO) and constriction factor based PSO (CPSO) give rise to comparatively higher computational time and less good optimal solution at par with current dissertation. This paper deals with ramp rate and constriction factor based well defined ramp rate PSO to compute various objectives namely cost, emission and total objective etc. and compares the result with DPSO and weight improved PSO (WIPSO) techniques illustrating lesser computational time and better optimal solution.
Abstract: This paper presents a numerical investigation of regime transition of flow of ellipsoidal particles and a comparison with that of spherical particle assembly. Particle assemblies constituting spherical and ellipsoidal particle of 2.5:1 aspect ratio are examined at separate instances in similar flow conditions in a shear cell model that is numerically developed based on the discrete element method. Correlations among elastically scaled stress, kinetically scaled stress, coordination number and volume fraction are investigated, and show important similarities and differences for the spherical and ellipsoidal particle assemblies. In particular, volume fractions at points of regime transition are identified for both types of particles. It is found that compared with spherical particle assembly, ellipsoidal particle assembly has higher volume fraction for the quasistatic to intermediate regime transition and lower volume fraction for the intermediate to inertial regime transition. Finally, the relationship between coordination number and volume fraction shows strikingly distinct features for the two cases, suggesting that different from spherical particles, the effect of the shear rate on the coordination number is not significant for ellipsoidal particles. This work provides a glimpse of currently running work on one of the most attractive scopes of research in this field and has a wide prospect in understanding rheology of more complex shaped particles in light of the strong basis of simpler spherical particle rheology.
Abstract: The goal of this project is to investigate constant
properties (called the Liouville-type Problem) for a p-stable map
as a local or global minimum of a p-energy functional where
the domain is a Euclidean space and the target space is a
closed half-ellipsoid. The First and Second Variation Formulas
for a p-energy functional has been applied in the Calculus
Variation Method as computation techniques. Stokes’ Theorem,
Cauchy-Schwarz Inequality, Hardy-Sobolev type Inequalities, and
the Bochner Formula as estimation techniques have been used to
estimate the lower bound and the upper bound of the derived
p-Harmonic Stability Inequality. One challenging point in this project
is to construct a family of variation maps such that the images
of variation maps must be guaranteed in a closed half-ellipsoid.
The other challenging point is to find a contradiction between the
lower bound and the upper bound in an analysis of p-Harmonic
Stability Inequality when a p-energy minimizing map is not constant.
Therefore, the possibility of a non-constant p-energy minimizing
map has been ruled out and the constant property for a p-energy
minimizing map has been obtained. Our research finding is to explore
the constant property for a p-stable map from a Euclidean space into
a closed half-ellipsoid in a certain range of p. The certain range of
p is determined by the dimension values of a Euclidean space (the
domain) and an ellipsoid (the target space). The certain range of p
is also bounded by the curvature values on an ellipsoid (that is, the
ratio of the longest axis to the shortest axis). Regarding Liouville-type
results for a p-stable map, our research finding on an ellipsoid is a
generalization of mathematicians’ results on a sphere. Our result is
also an extension of mathematicians’ Liouville-type results from a
special ellipsoid with only one parameter to any ellipsoid with (n+1)
parameters in the general setting.
Abstract: Ellipsometry is an optical method based on the study of the behavior of polarized light. The light reflected on a surface induces a change in the polarization state which depends on the characteristics of the material (complex refractive index and thickness of the different layers constituting the device). The purpose of this work is to determine the optical properties of semiconductor thin films by ellipsometry. This paper describes the experimental aspects concerning the semiconductor samples, the SE400 ellipsometer principle, and the results obtained by direct measurements of ellipsometric parameters and modelling using appropriate software.
Abstract: The power generated by eight point absorber type wave energy converters each having a different buoy are calculated in order to investigate the performances of buoys in this study. The calculations are carried out by modeling three different sea states observed in two different locations in the Black Sea. The floats analyzed in this study have two basic geometries and four different draft/radius (d/r) ratios. The buoys possess the shapes of a semi-ellipsoid and a semi-elliptic paraboloid. Additionally, the draft/radius ratios range from 0.25 to 1 by an increment of 0.25. The radiation forces acting on the buoys due to the oscillatory motions of these bodies are evaluated by employing a 3D panel method along with a distribution of 3D pulsating sources in frequency domain. On the other hand, the wave forces acting on the buoys which are taken as the sum of Froude-Krylov forces and diffraction forces are calculated by using linear wave theory. Furthermore, the wave energy converters are assumed to be taut-moored to the seabed so that the secondary body which houses a power take-off system oscillates with much smaller amplitudes compared to the buoy. As a result, it is assumed that there is not any significant contribution to the power generation from the motions of the housing body and the only contribution to power generation comes from the buoy. The power take-off systems of the wave energy converters are high pressure oil hydraulic systems which are identical in terms of their characteristic parameters. The results show that the power generated by wave energy converters which have semi-ellipsoid floats is higher than that of those which have semi elliptic paraboloid floats in both locations and in all sea states. It is also determined that the power generated by the wave energy converters follow an unsteady pattern such that they do not decrease or increase with changing draft/radius ratios of the floats. Although the highest power level is obtained with a semi-ellipsoid float which has a draft/radius ratio equal to 1, other floats of which the draft/radius ratio is 0.25 delivered higher power that the floats with a draft/radius ratio equal to 1 in some cases.
Abstract: In this paper, we present the design of the
super-ellipsoidal potential function (SEPF), that can be used for
autonomous collision avoidance of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)
in a 3-dimensional space. In the design of SEPF, we have the
full control over the shape and size of the potential function. In
particular, we can adjust the length, width, height, and the amount
of flattening at the tips of the potential function so that the collision
avoidance motion vector generated from the potential function can
be adjusted accordingly. Based on the idea of the SEPF, we also
propose an approach for the local autonomy of a UAV for its collision
avoidance when the UAV is teleoperated by a human operator. In
our proposed approach, a teleoperated UAV can not only avoid
collision autonomously with other surrounding objects but also track
the operator’s control input as closely as possible. As a result, an
operator can always be in control of the UAV for his/her high-level
guidance and navigation task without worrying too much about
the UAVs collision avoidance while it is being teleoperated. The
effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through a
human-in-the-loop simulation of quadrotor UAV teleoperation using
virtual robot experimentation platform (v-rep) and Matlab programs.
Abstract: This paper investigates the characteristics of wall
pressure fluctuations in naturally developing boundary layer flows
on axisymmetric bodies experimentally. The axisymmetric body has
a modified ellipsoidal blunt nose. Flush-mounted microphones are
used to measure the wall pressure fluctuations in the boundary layer
flow over the body. The measurements are performed in a low noise
wind tunnel. It is found that the correlation between the flow regime
and the characteristics of the pressure fluctuations is distinct. The
process from small fluctuation in laminar flow to large fluctuation in
turbulent flow is investigated. Tollmien-Schlichting wave (T-S wave)
is found to generate and develop in transition. Because of the T-S
wave, the wall pressure fluctuations in the transition region are higher
than those in the turbulent boundary layer.
Abstract: Single angle connections, which are bolted to the beam
web and the column flange, are studied to investigate their
moment-rotation behavior. Elastic–perfectly plastic material behavior
is assumed. ABAQUS software is used to analyze the nonlinear
behavior of a single angle connection. The identical geometric and
material conditions with Lipson’s test are used for verifying finite
element models. Since Kishi and Chen’s Power model and Lee and
Moon’s Log model are accurate only for a limited range of mechanism,
simpler and more accurate hyperbolic function models are proposed.
Abstract: Exact solution of an unsteady flow of elastico-viscous
fluid through a porous media in a tube of ellipsoidal cross section
under the influence of constant pressure gradient has been obtained in
this paper. Initially, the flow is generated by a constant pressure
gradient. After attaining the steady state, the pressure gradient is
suddenly withdrawn and the resulting fluid motion in a tube of
ellipsoidal cross section by taking into account of the porosity factor
of the bounding surface is investigated. The problem is solved in twostages
the first stage is a steady motion in tube under the influence of
a constant pressure gradient, the second stage concern with an
unsteady motion. The problem is solved employing separation of
variables technique. The results are expressed in terms of a nondimensional
porosity parameter (K) and elastico-viscosity parameter
(β), which depends on the Non-Newtonian coefficient. The flow
parameters are found to be identical with that of Newtonian case as
elastic-viscosity parameter tends to zero and porosity tends to
infinity. It is seen that the effect of elastico-viscosity parameter and
the porosity parameter of the bounding surface has significant effect
on the velocity parameter.

area enclosing ellipsoid is constructed around the sample. Also we
demonstrate that one can improve results of well-known algorithms
in fuzzy model identification task using Maxmin u/E parameters
estimation.
Abstract: Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films have
been synthesized by a radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical
vapor deposition (rf-PECVD) technique with different bias voltage
from 0.0 to -0.5 kV. The Raman spectra displayed the polymer-like
hydrogenated amorphous carbon (PLCH) film with 0.0 to -0.1 and
a-C:H films with -0.2 to -0.5 kV of bias voltages. The surface chemical
information of all films were studied by X-ray photoelectron
spectroscopy (XPS) technique, presented to C-C (sp2 and sp3) and C-O
bonds, and relative carbon (C) and oxygen (O) atomics contents. The
O contamination had affected on structure and optical properties. The
true density of PLCH and a-C:H films were characterized by X-ray
refractivity (XRR) method, showed the result as in the range of
1.16-1.73 g/cm3 that depending on an increasing of bias voltage. The
hardness was proportional to the true density of films. In addition, the
optical properties i.e. refractive index (n) and extinction coefficient (k)
of these films were determined by a spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE)
method that give formation to in 1.62-2.10 (n) and 0.04-0.15 (k)
respectively. These results indicated that the optical properties
confirmed the Raman results as presenting the structure changed with
applied bias voltage increased.
Abstract: The reachable set bounding estimation for distributed
delay systems with disturbances is a new problem. In this paper,we
consider this problem subject to not only time varying delay and
polytopic uncertainties but also distributed delay systems which is
not studied fully untill now. we can obtain improved non-ellipsoidal
reachable set estimation for neural networks with time-varying delay
by the maximal Lyapunov-Krasovskii fuctional which is constructed
as the pointwise maximum of a family of Lyapunov-Krasovskii
fuctionals corresponds to vertexes of uncertain polytope. On the other
hand, matrix inequalities containing only one scalar and Matlabs
LMI Toolbox is utilized to give a non-ellipsoidal description of the
reachable set.finally, numerical examples are given to illustrate the
existing results.
Abstract: The Global Positioning System (GPS), satellite-based technology, has been utilized extensively in the last few years in a wide range of Geometrics and Geographic Information Systems’ (GIS) applications. One of the main challenges dealing with GPS-based heights consists of converting them into Mean Sea Level (MSL) heights, which is used in surveys and mapping.
In this research’s work, differences in heights of 50 points, in northern part of Libya has been carried out by using both ordinary leveling (in which Geoid is the reference datum) and GPS techniques (in which Ellipsoid is the reference datum). In addition, this study utilized the EGM2008 model to obtain the undulation values between the ellipsoidal and orthometric heights. From these values of ellipsoidal heights can be obtained from GPS observations to compute the orthomteric heights. This research presents a suitable alternative, from an economical point of view, to substitute the expensive traditional leveling technique, particularly, for topographic mapping.
Abstract: Fully reusable spaceplanes do not exist as yet. This implies that design-qualification for optimized highly-integrated forebody-inlet configuration of booster-stage vehicle cannot be based on archival data of other spaceplanes. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel TIPSO-SVM expert system methodology. A non-trivial problem related to optimization and classification of hypersonic forebody-inlet configuration in conjunction with mass-model of the two-stage-to-orbit (TSTO) vehicle is solved. The hybrid-heuristic machine learning methodology is based on two-step improved particle swarm optimizer (TIPSO) algorithm and two-step support vector machine (SVM) data classification method. The efficacy of method is tested by first evolving an optimal configuration for hypersonic compression system using TIPSO algorithm; thereafter, classifying the results using two-step SVM method. In the first step extensive but non-classified mass-model training data for multiple optimized configurations is segregated and pre-classified for learning of SVM algorithm. In second step the TIPSO optimized mass-model data is classified using the SVM classification. Results showed remarkable improvement in configuration and mass-model along with sizing parameters.
Abstract: The adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA), immunoglobulin G (IgG) and fibrinogen (Fgn) on fluorinated selfassembled monolayers have been studied using time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (SE). The objective of the work has to establish the utility of ToF-SIMS for the determination of the amount of protein adsorbed on the surface. Quantification of surface adsorbed proteins was carried out using SE and a good correlation between ToF-SIMS results and SE was achieved. The surface distribution of proteins were also analysed using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). We show that the surface distribution of proteins strongly affect the ToFSIMS results.
Abstract: The porous silicon (PS), formed from the anodization
of a p+ type substrate silicon, consists of a network organized in a
pseudo-column as structure of multiple side ramifications. Structural
micro-topology can be interpreted as the fraction of the interconnected
solid phase contributing to thermal transport. The
reduction of dimensions of silicon of each nanocristallite during the
oxidation induced a reduction in thermal conductivity. Integration of
thermal sensors in the Microsystems silicon requires an effective
insulation of the sensor element. Indeed, the low thermal conductivity
of PS consists in a very promising way in the fabrication of integrated
thermal Microsystems. In this work we are interesting in the
measurements of thermal conductivity (on the surface and in depth)
of PS by the micro-Raman spectroscopy. The thermal conductivity is
studied according to the parameters of anodization (initial doping and
current density. We also, determine porosity of samples by
spectroellipsometry.
Abstract: This paper is devoted to predict laminar and turbulent
heating rates around blunt re-entry spacecraft at hypersonic
conditions. Heating calculation of a hypersonic body is normally
performed during the critical part of its flight trajectory. The
procedure is of an inverse method, where a shock wave is assumed,
and the body shape that supports this shock, as well as the flowfield
between the shock and body, are calculated. For simplicity the
normal momentum equation is replaced with a second order pressure
relation; this simplification significantly reduces computation time.
The geometries specified in this research, are parabola and ellipsoids
which may have conical after bodies. An excellent agreement is
observed between the results obtained in this paper and those
calculated by others- research. Since this method is much faster than
Navier-Stokes solutions, it can be used in preliminary design,
parametric study of hypersonic vehicles.
Abstract: A novel method of learning complex fuzzy decision regions in the n-dimensional feature space is proposed. Through the fuzzy decision regions, a given pattern's class membership value of every class is determined instead of the conventional crisp class the pattern belongs to. The n-dimensional fuzzy decision region is approximated by union of hyperellipsoids. By explicitly parameterizing these hyperellipsoids, the decision regions are determined by estimating the parameters of each hyperellipsoid.Genetic Algorithm is applied to estimate the parameters of each region component. With the global optimization ability of GA, the learned decision region can be arbitrarily complex.
Abstract: On the basis of the linearized Phillips-Herffron model of a single-machine power system, a novel method for designing unified power flow controller (UPFC) based output feedback controller is presented. The design problem of output feedback controller for UPFC is formulated as an optimization problem according to with the time domain-based objective function which is solved by iteration particle swarm optimization (IPSO) that has a strong ability to find the most optimistic results. To ensure the robustness of the proposed damping controller, the design process takes into account a wide range of operating conditions and system configurations. The simulation results prove the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method in terms of a high performance power system. The simulation study shows that the designed controller by Iteration PSO performs better than Classical PSO in finding the solution.
