Abstract: To address the problem that the FM continuous-wave (FMCW) radar extracts human vital sign signals which are susceptible to noise interference and low reconstruction accuracy, a detection scheme for the sign signals is proposed. Firstly, an improved complete ensemble empirical modal decomposition with adaptive noise (ICEEMDAN) algorithm is applied to decompose the radar-extracted thoracic signals to obtain several intrinsic modal functions (IMF) with different spatial scales, and then the IMF components are optimized by a backpropagation (BP) neural network improved by immune genetic algorithm (IGA). The simulation results show that this scheme can effectively separate the noise, accurately extract the respiratory and heartbeat signals and improve the reconstruction accuracy and signal to-noise ratio of the sign signals.
Abstract: Metropolitan areas need urban transformation and urban renewal in terms of their internal Dynamics. Since 1980, the İstanbul Metropolitan area has been started to urban growth, while the population was increasing and it has brought together masses that have different lifestyles and cultures. Commercial and residential areas' spatial needs and decisions are affected by these different lifestyles. As the terms shopping mall and commercial Street became widespread, consumption trends had changed depending on the socio-economic characteristics of the people. Increase in demand for these areas, the number of shopping centers has increased, while the shopping streets started to be as effective as the shopping centers and have been pedestrianized. In this article, the change in commercial area site selection by the dynamics of the population will be examined in cities that diverged from spatial-temporal limitations. In the study, the analysis of multilayered data using geographic information systems (GIS) will be used as a method. With this method, a more synthesistic approach will be introduced with the collection editing, querying, and analysis of geographical data in computer-based systems. While conducting this analysis, Alemdağ Street in the Ümraniye district of İstanbul, where a pedestrian decision was made, will be based on and the change in the commercial and residential functions before and after the pedestrianization decision will be evaluated.
Abstract: This study presented hybrid pre-processing approach along with a conceptual model to enhance the accuracy of river discharge prediction. In order to achieve this goal, Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition algorithm (EEMD), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Mutual Information (MI) were employed as a hybrid pre-processing approach conjugated to Least Square Support Vector Machine (LSSVM). A conceptual strategy namely multi-station model was developed to forecast the Souris River discharge more accurately. The strategy used herein was capable of covering uncertainties and complexities of river discharge modeling. DWT and EEMD was coupled, and the feature selection was performed for decomposed sub-series using MI to be employed in multi-station model. In the proposed feature selection method, some useless sub-series were omitted to achieve better performance. Results approved efficiency of the proposed DWT-EEMD-MI approach to improve accuracy of multi-station modeling strategies.
Abstract: With the rapid development of modern communication,
diagnosing the fiber-optic quality and faults in real-time is widely
focused. In this paper, a Labview-based system is proposed for
fiber-optic faults detection. The wavelet threshold denoising method
combined with Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) is applied to
denoise the optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) signal. Then
the method based on Gabor representation is used to detect events.
Experimental measurements show that signal to noise ratio (SNR)
of the OTDR signal is improved by 1.34dB on average, compared
with using the wavelet threshold denosing method. The proposed
system has a high score in event detection capability and accuracy.
The maximum detectable fiber length of the proposed Labview-based
system can be 65km.
Abstract: Nowadays, induction motors have a significant role in industries. Condition monitoring (CM) of this equipment has gained a remarkable importance during recent years due to huge production losses, substantial imposed costs and increases in vulnerability, risk, and uncertainty levels. Motor current signature analysis (MCSA) is one of the most important techniques in CM. This method can be used for rotor broken bars detection. Signal processing methods such as Fast Fourier transformation (FFT), Wavelet transformation and Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) are used for analyzing MCSA output data. In this study, these signal processing methods are used for broken bar problem detection of Mobarakeh steel company induction motors. Based on wavelet transformation method, an index for fault detection, CF, is introduced which is the variation of maximum to the mean of wavelet transformation coefficients. We find that, in the broken bar condition, the amount of CF factor is greater than the healthy condition. Based on EMD method, the energy of intrinsic mode functions (IMF) is calculated and finds that when motor bars become broken the energy of IMFs increases.
Abstract: This paper presents a study of Lamb wave damage
diagnosis of composite delamination using instantaneous phase
data. Numerical experiments are performed using the finite element
method. Different sizes of delamination damages are modeled
using finite element package ABAQUS. Lamb wave excitation
and responses data are obtained using a pitch-catch configuration.
Empirical mode decomposition is employed to extract the intrinsic
mode functions (IMF). Hilbert–Huang Transform is applied to each
of the resulting IMFs to obtain the instantaneous phase information.
The baseline data for healthy plates are also generated using the
same procedure. The size of delamination is correlated with the
instantaneous phase change for damage diagnosis. It is observed that
the unwrapped instantaneous phase of shows a consistent behavior
with the increasing delamination size.
Abstract: Software-defined networking (SDN) provides a solution
for scalable network framework with decoupled control and data
plane. However, this architecture also induces a particular distributed
denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that can affect or even overwhelm
the SDN network. DDoS attack detection problem has to date been
mostly researched as entropy comparison problem. However, this
problem lacks the utilization of SDN, and the results are not accurate.
In this paper, we propose a DDoS attack detection method, which
interprets DDoS detection as a signature matching problem and is
formulated as Earth Mover’s Distance (EMD) model. Considering
the feasibility and accuracy, we further propose to define the cost
function of EMD to be a generalized Kullback-Leibler divergence.
Simulation results show that our proposed method can detect DDoS
attacks by comparing EMD values with the ones computed in the case
without attacks. Moreover, our method can significantly increase the
true positive rate of detection.
Abstract: This paper proposes empirical mode decomposition
(EMD) together with wavelet transform (WT) based analytic signal
for power quality (PQ) events assessment. EMD decomposes the
complex signals into several intrinsic mode functions (IMF). As
the PQ events are non stationary, instantaneous parameters have
been calculated from these IMFs using analytic signal obtained
form WT. We obtained three parameters from IMFs and then used
KNN classifier for classification of PQ disturbance. We compared
the classification of proposed method for PQ events by obtaining
the features using Hilbert transform (HT) method. The classification
efficiency using WT based analytic method is 97.5% and using HT
based analytic signal is 95.5%.
Abstract: Empirical mode decomposition (EMD), a new
data-driven of time-series decomposition, has the advantage of
supposing that a time series is non-linear or non-stationary, as
is implicitly achieved in Fourier decomposition. However, the
EMD suffers of mode mixing problem in some cases. The aim of
this paper is to present a solution for a common type of signals
causing of EMD mode mixing problem, in case a signal suffers
of an intermittency. By an artificial example, the solution shows
superior performance in terms of cope EMD mode mixing problem
comparing with the conventional EMD and Ensemble Empirical
Mode decomposition (EEMD). Furthermore, the over-sifting problem
is also completely avoided; and computation load is reduced roughly
six times compared with EEMD, an ensemble number of 50.
Abstract: This paper investigates and evaluates experimentally the structural behavior of high strength concrete (HSC) beams under fire and compares it with that of Normal strength concrete (NSC) beams. The main investigated parameters are: concrete compressive strength (300 or 600 kg/cm2); the concrete cover thickness (3 or 5 cm); the degree of temperature (room temperature or 600 oC); the type of cooling (air or water); and the fire exposure time (3 or 5 hours). Test results showed that the concrete compressive strength decreases significantly as the exposure time to fire increases.
Abstract: This paper presents a denoising method called EMD-Custom that was based on Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and the modified Customized Thresholding Function (Custom) algorithms. EMD was applied to decompose adaptively a noisy signal into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Then, all the noisy IMFs got threshold by applying the presented thresholding function to suppress noise and to improve the signal to noise ratio (SNR). The method was tested on simulated data and real ECG signal, and the results were compared to the EMD-Based signal denoising methods using the soft and hard thresholding. The results showed the superior performance of the proposed EMD-Custom denoising over the traditional approach. The performances were evaluated in terms of SNR in dB, and Mean Square Error (MSE).
Abstract: In recent times, we noticed an interesting and important
role of non-coplanar degree-of-freedom (Φ = 00) in heavy ion
reactions. Using the dynamical cluster-decay model (DCM) with
Φ degree-of-freedom included, we have studied three compound
systems 246Bk∗, 164Yb∗ and 105Ag∗. Here, within the DCM with
pocket formula for nuclear proximity potential, we look for the
effects of including compact, non-coplanar configurations (Φc = 00)
on the non-compound nucleus (nCN) contribution in total fusion
cross section σfus. For 246Bk∗, formed in 11B+235U and 14N+232Th
reaction channels, the DCM with coplanar nuclei (Φc = 00) shows
an nCN contribution for 11B+235U channel, but none for 14N+232Th
channel, which on including Φ gives both reaction channels as
pure compound nucleus decays. In the case of 164Yb∗, formed in
64Ni+100Mo, the small nCN effects for Φ=00 are reduced to almost
zero for Φ = 00. Interestingly, however, 105Ag∗ for Φ = 00 shows a
small nCN contribution, which gets strongly enhanced for Φ = 00,
such that the characteristic property of PCN presents a change of
behaviour, like that of a strongly fissioning superheavy element to a
weakly fissioning nucleus; note that 105Ag∗ is a weakly fissioning
nucleus and Psurv behaves like one for a weakly fissioning nucleus
for both Φ = 00 and Φ = 00. Apparently, Φ is presenting itself like
a good degree-of-freedom in the DCM.
Abstract: The primary objective of this work was to study the
effect of resin chemistry, pH and molarity of binding and elution
buffer on aggregate removal using Cation Exchange Chromatography
and find the optimum conditions which can give efficient aggregate
removal with minimum loss of yield. Four different resins were used
for carrying out the experiments: Fractogel EMD SO3
-(S), Fractogel EMD COO-(M), Capto SP ImpRes and S Ceramic HyperD. Runs
were carried out on the AKTA Avant system. Design of Experiments
(DOE) was used for analysis using the JMP software. The
dependence of the yield obtained using different resins on the
operating conditions was studied. Success has been achieved in
obtaining yield greater than 90% using Capto SP ImpRes and
Fractogel EMD COO-(M) resins. It has also been found that a change
in the operating conditions generally has different effects on the
yields obtained using different resins.
Abstract: We present a refined multiscale Shannon entropy for
analyzing electroencephalogram (EEG), which reflects the underlying
dynamics of EEG over multiple scales. The rationale behind
this method is that neurological signals such as EEG possess
distinct dynamics over different spectral modes. To deal with the
nonlinear and nonstationary nature of EEG, the recently developed
empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is incorporated, allowing a
decomposition of EEG into its inherent spectral components, referred
to as intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). By calculating the Shannon
entropy of IMFs in a time-dependent manner and summing them over
adaptive multiple scales, it results in an adaptive subscale entropy
measure of EEG. Simulation and experimental results show that
the proposed entropy properly reveals the dynamical changes over
multiple scales.
Abstract: This work proposes a data-driven multiscale based
quantitative measures to reveal the underlying complexity of
electroencephalogram (EEG), applying to a rodent model of
hypoxic-ischemic brain injury and recovery. Motivated by that real
EEG recording is nonlinear and non-stationary over different
frequencies or scales, there is a need of more suitable approach over
the conventional single scale based tools for analyzing the EEG data.
Here, we present a new framework of complexity measures
considering changing dynamics over multiple oscillatory scales. The
proposed multiscale complexity is obtained by calculating entropies of
the probability distributions of the intrinsic mode functions extracted
by the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) of EEG. To quantify
EEG recording of a rat model of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury
following cardiac arrest, the multiscale version of Tsallis entropy is
examined. To validate the proposed complexity measure, actual EEG
recordings from rats (n=9) experiencing 7 min cardiac arrest followed
by resuscitation were analyzed. Experimental results demonstrate that
the use of the multiscale Tsallis entropy leads to better discrimination
of the injury levels and improved correlations with the neurological
deficit evaluation after 72 hours after cardiac arrest, thus suggesting an
effective metric as a prognostic tool.
Abstract: The tourism industry has been widely used to eradicate poverty, due to the ability to generate income, employment as well as improving the quality of life. The industry has faced rapid growth with support from local residents who were involved directly and indirectly in tourism activities. Their support and behaviour does not only facilitate in boosting tourists’ satisfaction levels, but at the same time it contributes to the word-of-mouth promotion among the visitors. In order to ensure the success of the industry, the involvement and participation of the local communities are pertinent. This paper endeavours on local community attitudes, benefit and their support toward future tourism development in Tioman Island. Through a series of descriptive and factor analyses, various useful understandings on the issues of interest revealed. The findings indicated that community with personal benefit will support future development. Meanwhile, the finding also revealed that the community with negative perception still supports future tourism development due to their over reliance on this sector as their main source of income and destination development means.
Abstract: Information in the nervous system is coded as firing patterns of electrical signals called action potential or spike so an essential step in analysis of neural mechanism is detection of action potentials embedded in the neural data. There are several methods proposed in the literature for such a purpose. In this paper a novel method based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) has been developed. EMD is a decomposition method that extracts oscillations with different frequency range in a waveform. The method is adaptive and no a-priori knowledge about data or parameter adjusting is needed in it. The results for simulated data indicate that proposed method is comparable with wavelet based methods for spike detection. For neural signals with signal-to-noise ratio near 3 proposed methods is capable to detect more than 95% of action potentials accurately.
Abstract: Activated carbons were produced from olive stones by a chemical process. The activated carbon (AC) were modified by nitric acid and used as adsorbents for the removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution. The activated carbons were characterized by nitrogen adsorption and enthalpy of immersion. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to study the effect of initial different concentrations solution on dye adsorption properties. Isotherms were fitted to Langmuir model, and corresponding parameters were determined. The results showed that the increase of ration of ZnCl2 leads to increase in apparent surface areas and produces activated carbons with pore structure more developed. However, the maximum MB uptakes for all carbons were determined and correlated with activated carbons characteristics.
Abstract: We study a Dirichlet boundary value problem for Lane-Emden equation involving two fractional orders. Lane-Emden equation has been widely used to describe a variety of phenomena in physics and astrophysics, including aspects of stellar structure, the thermal history of a spherical cloud of gas, isothermal gas spheres, and thermionic currents. However, ordinary Lane-Emden equation does not provide the correct description of the dynamics for systems in complex media. In order to overcome this problem and describe dynamical processes in a fractalmedium, numerous generalizations of Lane-Emden equation have been proposed. One such generalization replaces the ordinary derivative by a fractional derivative in the Lane-Emden equation. This gives rise to the fractional Lane-Emden equation with a single index. Recently, a new type of Lane-Emden equation with two different fractional orders has been introduced which provides a more flexible model for fractal processes as compared with the usual one characterized by a single index. The contraction mapping principle and Krasnoselskiis fixed point theorem are applied to prove the existence of solutions of the problem in a Banach space. Ulam-Hyers stability for iterative Cauchy fractional differential equation is defined and studied.
