Abstract: In this paper, an improved active snubber cell is proposed on account of soft switching (SS) family of pulse width modulation (PWM) DC-DC converters. The improved snubber cell provides zero-voltage transition (ZVT) turn on and zero-current transition (ZCT) turn off for main switch. The snubber cell decreases EMI noise and operates with SS in a wide range of line and load voltages. Besides, all of the semiconductor devices in the converter operate with SS. There is no additional voltage and current stress on the main devices. Additionally, extra voltage stress does not occur on the auxiliary switch and its current stress is acceptable value. The improved converter has a low cost and simple structure. The theoretical analysis of converter is clarified and the operating states are given in detail. The experimental results of converter are obtained by prototype of 500 W and 100 kHz. It is observed that the experimental results and theoretical analysis of converter are suitable with each other perfectly.
Abstract: This project aims at building an efficient and
automatic power monitoring SCADA system, which is capable of
monitoring the electrical parameters of high voltage powered devices
in real time for example RMS voltage and current, frequency, energy
consumed, power factor etc. The system uses RS-485 serial
communication interface to transfer data over longer distances.
Embedded C programming is the platform used to develop two
hardware modules namely: RTU and Master Station modules, which
both use the CC2540 BLE 4.0 microcontroller configured in slave /
master mode. The Si8900 galvanic ally isolated microchip is used to
perform ADC externally. The hardware communicates via UART
port and sends data to the user PC using the USB port. Labview
software is used to design a user interface to display current state of
the power loads being monitored as well as logs data to excel
spreadsheet file. An understanding of the Si8900’s auto baud rate
process is key to successful implementation of this project.
Abstract: This paper presents an analysis study on the impacts
of the changes of the capacitor banks, the loss of a transformer, and
the installation of distributed generation on the voltage total harmonic
distortion and harmonic resonance. The study is applied in a real
system in Oman, Sohar Industrial Port–C Substation Network.
Frequency scan method and Fourier series analysis method are used
with the help of EDSA software. Moreover, the results are compared
with limits specified by national Oman distribution code.
Abstract: Device-to-device (D2D) communication is considered a
promising technique to provide wireless peer-to-peer communication
services. Due to increasing demand on mobile services, available
spectrum for radio frequency (RF) based communications becomes
scarce. Recently, visible light communications (VLC) has evolved
as a high speed wireless data transmission technology for indoor
environments with abundant available bandwidth. In this paper,
a novel VLC based D2D communication that provides wireless
peer-to-peer communication is proposed. Potential low operating
power devices for an efficient D2D communication over increasing
distance of separation between devices is analyzed. Optical repeaters
(OR) are also proposed to enhance the performance in an environment
where direct D2D communications yield degraded performance.
Simulation results show that VLC plays an important role in
providing efficient D2D communication up to a distance of 1 m
between devices. It is also found that the OR significantly improves
the coverage distance up to 3.5 m.
Abstract: In this paper, a desiccant solar unit for air
conditioning and desalination is presented first. Secondly, a dynamic
modelling study of the desiccant wheel is developed. After that, a
simulation study and an experimental investigation of the behaviour
of desiccant wheel are developed. The experimental investigation is
done in the chamber of commerce in Freiburg-Germany. Indeed, the
variations of calculated and measured temperatures and specific
humidity of dehumidified and rejected air are presented where a good
agreement is found when comparing the model predictions with
experimental data under the considered range of operating conditions.
Finally, the study of the compartments of desalination and water
condensation shows that the unit can produce an acceptable quantity
of water at the same time of the air conditioning operation.
Abstract: The Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS)
technology is a new advanced solution that increases the reliability
and provides more flexibility, controllability, and stability of a power
system. The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC), as the most
versatile FACTS device for regulating power flow, is able to control
respectively transmission line real power, reactive power, and node
voltage. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of the
UPFC on the load flow, the power losses, and the voltage stability
using NEPLAN software modules, Newton-Raphson load flow is
used for the power flow analysis and the modal analysis is used for
the study of the voltage stability. The simulation was carried out on
the IEEE 14-bus test system.
Abstract: Smart metering and demand response are gaining
ground in industrial and residential applications. Smart Appliances
have been given concern towards achieving Smart home. The success
of Smart grid development relies on the successful implementation of
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in power sector.
Smart Appliances have been the technology under development and
many new contributions to its realization have been reported in the
last few years. The role of ICT here is to capture data in real time,
thereby allowing bi-directional flow of information/data between
producing and utilization point; that lead a way for the attainment of
Smart appliances where home appliances can communicate between
themselves and provide a self-control (switch on and off) using the
signal (information) obtained from the grid. This paper depicts the
background on ICT for smart appliances paying a particular attention
to the current technology and identifying the future ICT trends for
load monitoring through which smart appliances can be achieved to
facilitate an efficient smart home system which promote demand
response program. This paper grouped and reviewed the recent
contributions, in order to establish the current state of the art and
trends of the technology, so that the reader can be provided with a
comprehensive and insightful review of where ICT for smart
appliances stands and is heading to. The paper also presents a brief
overview of communication types, and then narrowed the discussion
to the load monitoring (Non-intrusive Appliances Load Monitoring
‘NALM’). Finally, some future trends and challenges in the further
development of the ICT framework are discussed to motivate future
contributions that address open problems and explore new
possibilities.
