Abstract: In this paper, we propose a blind and robust audio watermarking scheme based on spread spectrum in Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) domain. Watermarks are embedded in the low-frequency coefficients, which is less audible. The key idea is dividing the audio signal into small frames, and magnitude of the 6th level of DWT approximation coefficients is modifying based upon the Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technique. Also, the psychoacoustic model for enhancing in imperceptibility, as well as Savitsky-Golay filter for increasing accuracy in extraction, is used. The experimental results illustrate high robustness against most common attacks, i.e. Gaussian noise addition, Low pass filter, Resampling, Requantizing, MP3 compression, without significant perceptual distortion (ODG is higher than -1). The proposed scheme has about 83 bps data payload.
Abstract: Acoustic sensors are extensively used in recent days not only for sensing and condition monitoring applications but also for small scale energy harvesting applications to power wireless sensor networks (WSN) due to their inherent advantages. The natural frequency of the structure plays a major role in energy harvesting applications since the sensor key element has to operate at resonant frequency. In this paper, circular diaphragm based MEMS acoustic sensor is modelled by Lumped Element Model (LEM) and the natural frequency is compared with the simulated model using Finite Element Method (FEM) tool COMSOL Multiphysics. The sensor has the circular diaphragm of 3000 µm radius and thickness of 30 µm to withstand the high SPL (Sound Pressure Level) and also to withstand the various fabrication steps. A Piezoelectric ZnO layer of thickness of 1 µm sandwiched between two aluminium electrodes of thickness 0.5 µm and is coated on the diaphragm. Further, a channel with radius 3000 µm radius and length 270 µm is connected at the bottom of the diaphragm. The natural frequency of the structure by LEM method is approximately 16.6 kHz which is closely matching with that of simulated structure with suitable approximations.
Abstract: Thermal performance is considered to be a key measure in building sustainability. One of the technologies used in the current building sustainable design is the rooftop solar PV power generators. The application of this type of technology has expanded vastly during the last five years in many countries. This paper studies the effect of roof shading developed by the solar PV panels on dwellings’ thermal performance. The analysis in this work is performed by using two types of packages: “AccuRate Sustainability” for rating the energy efficiency of residential building design, and “PVSYST” for the solar PV power system design. The former package is used to calculate the annual heating and cooling load, and the later package is used to evaluate the power production from the roof top PV system. The analysis correlates the electrical energy generated from the PV panels to the change in the heating and cooling load due to roof shading. Different roof orientation, roof inclination, roof insulation, as well as PV panel area are considered in this study. The analysis shows that the drop in energy efficiency due to the shaded area of the roof by PV panels is negligible compared to the energy generated by these panels.
Abstract: As a rapid growth of digital videos and data
communications, video summarization that provides a shorter version
of the video for fast video browsing and retrieval is necessary.
Key frame extraction is one of the mechanisms to generate video
summary. In general, the extracted key frames should both represent
the entire video content and contain minimum redundancy. However,
most of the existing approaches heuristically select key frames; hence,
the selected key frames may not be the most different frames and/or
not cover the entire content of a video. In this paper, we propose
a method of video summarization which provides the reasonable
objective functions for selecting key frames. In particular, we apply
a statistical dependency measure called quadratic mutual informaion
as our objective functions for maximizing the coverage of the
entire video content as well as minimizing the redundancy among
selected key frames. The proposed key frame extraction algorithm
finds key frames as an optimization problem. Through experiments,
we demonstrate the success of the proposed video summarization
approach that produces video summary with better coverage of
the entire video content while less redundancy among key frames
comparing to the state-of-the-art approaches.
Abstract: Waste heat recovery by means of Organic Rankine
Cycle is a promising technology for the recovery of engine
exhaust heat. However, it is complex to find out the optimum
cycle conditions with appropriate working fluids to match exhaust
gas waste heat due to its high temperature. Hence, this paper
focuses on comparing sub-critical and supercritical ORC conditions
with eight working fluids on a combined diesel engine-ORC
system. The model employs two ORC designs, Regenerative-ORC
and Pre-Heating-Regenerative-ORC respectively. The thermodynamic
calculations rely on the first and second law of thermodynamics,
thermal efficiency and exergy destruction factors are the fundamental
parameters evaluated. Additionally, in this study, environmental
and safety, GWP (Global Warming Potential) and ODP (Ozone
Depletion Potential), characteristic of the refrigerants are taken
into consideration as evaluation criteria to define the optimal ORC
configuration and conditions. Consequently, the studys outcomes
reveal that supercritical ORCs with alkane and siloxane are more
suitable for high temperature exhaust waste heat recovery in contrast
to sub-critical conditions.
Abstract: In order to solve the instantaneous power ripple and achieve better performance of direct power control (DPC) for a three-phase PWM rectifier, a control method is proposed in this paper. This control method is applied to overcome the instantaneous power ripple, to eliminate line current harmonics and therefore reduce the total harmonic distortion and to improve the power factor. A switching table is based on the analysis on the change of instantaneous active and reactive power, to select the optimum switching state of the three-phase PWM rectifier. The simulation result shows feasibility of this control method.
