Abstract: In this study, a spectral element method (SEM) is employed to predict the free vibration of a Euler-Bernoulli beam resting on a Winkler foundation with elastically restrained ends. The formulation of the dynamic stiffness matrix has been established by solving the differential equation of motion which was transformed to frequency domain. Non-dimensional natural frequencies and shape modes are obtained by solving the partial differential equations, numerically. Numerical comparisons and examples are performed to show the effectiveness of the SEM and to investigate the effects of various parameters, such as the springs at the boundaries and the elastic foundation parameter on the vibration frequencies. The obtained results demonstrate that the present method can also be applied to solve the more general problem of the dynamic analysis of structures with higher order precision.
Abstract: This research presents the three-dimensional mechanical characteristics of a commercial gas diffusion layer by experiment and simulation results. Although the mechanical performance of gas diffusion layers has attracted much attention, its reliability and accuracy are still a major challenge. With the help of simulation analysis methods, it is beneficial to the gas diffusion layer’s extensive commercial development and the overall stress analysis of proton electrolyte membrane fuel cells during its pre-production design period. Therefore, in this paper, a three-dimensional constitutive model of a commercial gas diffusion layer, including its material stiffness matrix parameters, is developed and coded, in the user-defined material model of a commercial finite element method software for simulation. Then, the model is validated by comparing experimental results as well as simulation outcomes. As a result, both the experimental data and simulation results show a good agreement with each other, with high accuracy.
Abstract: In this work, a three-dimensional finite element model was developed to investigate the crack breathing behavior at different crack locations considering the effect of unbalance force. A two-disk rotor with a crack is simulated using ABAQUS. The duration of each crack status (open, closed and partially open/closed) during a full shaft rotation was examined to analyse the crack breathing behavior. Unbalanced shaft crack breathing behavior was found to be different at different crack locations. The breathing behavior of crack along the shaft length is divided into different regions depending on the unbalance force and crack location. The simulated results in this work can be further utilised to obtain the time-varying stiffness matrix of the cracked shaft element under the influence of unbalance force.
Abstract: Structural failure is caused mainly by damage that
often occurs on structures. Many researchers focus on to obtain very
efficient tools to detect the damage in structures in the early state. In
the past decades, a subject that has received considerable attention in
literature is the damage detection as determined by variations in the
dynamic characteristics or response of structures. The study presents
a new damage identification technique. The technique detects the
damage location for the incomplete structure system using output
data only. The method indicates the damage based on the free
vibration test data by using ‘Two Points Condensation (TPC)
technique’. This method creates a set of matrices by reducing the
structural system to two degrees of freedom systems. The current
stiffness matrices obtain from optimization the equation of motion
using the measured test data. The current stiffness matrices compare
with original (undamaged) stiffness matrices. The large percentage
changes in matrices’ coefficients lead to the location of the damage. TPC technique is applied to the experimental data of a simply
supported steel beam model structure after inducing thickness change
in one element, where two cases consider. The method detects the
damage and determines its location accurately in both cases. In
addition, the results illustrate these changes in stiffness matrix can be
a useful tool for continuous monitoring of structural safety using
ambient vibration data. Furthermore, its efficiency proves that this
technique can be used also for big structures.
Abstract: In this paper, the specific sound Transmission Loss
(TL) of the Laminated Composite Plate (LCP) with different material
properties in each layer is investigated. The numerical method to
obtain the TL of the LCP is proposed by using elastic plate theory. The
transfer matrix approach is novelty presented for computational
efficiency in solving the numerous layers of dynamic stiffness matrix
(D-matrix) of the LCP. Besides the numerical simulations for
calculating the TL of the LCP, the material properties inverse method
is presented for the design of a laminated composite plate analogous to
a metallic plate with a specified TL. As a result, it demonstrates that
the proposed computational algorithm exhibits high efficiency with a
small number of iterations for achieving the goal. This method can be
effectively employed to design and develop tailor-made materials for
various applications.
Abstract: Determination of optimal parameters of a passive
control system device is the primary objective of this study.
Expanding upon the use of control devices in wind and earthquake
hazard reduction has led to development of various control systems.
The advantage of non-linearity characteristics in a passive control
device and the optimal control method using LQR algorithm are
explained in this study. Finally, this paper introduces a simple
approach to determine optimum parameters of a nonlinear viscous
damper for vibration control of structures. A MATLAB program is
used to produce the dynamic motion of the structure considering the
stiffness matrix of the SDOF frame and the non-linear damping
effect. This study concluded that the proposed system (variable
damping system) has better performance in system response control
than a linear damping system. Also, according to the energy
dissipation graph, the total energy loss is greater in non-linear
damping system than other systems.
Abstract: The tension leg platform (TLP) is one of the compliant structures which are generally used for deep water oil exploration. With respect to the horizontal degrees of freedom, it behaves like a floating structure moored by vertical tethers which are pretension due to the excess buoyancy of the platform, whereas with respect to the vertical degrees of freedom, it is stiff and resembles a fixed structure and is not allowed to float freely. In the current study, a numerical study for square TLP using modified Morison equation was carried out in the time domain with water particle kinematics using Airy’s linear wave theory to investigate the effect of changing the tether tension force on the stiffness matrix of TLP's, the dynamic behavior of TLP's; and on the fatigue stresses in the cables. The effect was investigated for different parameters of the hydrodynamic forces such as wave periods, and wave heights. The numerical study takes into consideration the effect of coupling between various degrees of freedom. The stiffness of the TLP was derived from a combination of hydrostatic restoring forces and restoring forces due to cables. Nonlinear equation was solved using Newmark’s beta integration method. Only uni-directional waves in the surge direction was considered in the analysis. It was found that for short wave periods (i.e. 10 sec.), the surge response consisted of small amplitude oscillations about a displaced position that is significantly dependent on tether tension force, wave height; whereas for longer wave periods, the surge response showed high amplitude oscillations that is significantly dependent on wave height, and that special attention should be given to tethers fatigue because of their high tensile static and dynamic stress.
Abstract: The orthogonal processes to shape the triangle steel plate into a equilateral vertical steel are examined by an incremental elasto-plastic finite-element method based on an updated Lagrangian formulation. The highly non-linear problems due to the geometric changes, the inelastic constitutive behavior and the boundary conditions varied with deformation are taken into account in an incremental manner. On the contact boundary, a modified Coulomb friction mode is specially considered. A weighting factor r-minimum is employed to limit the step size of loading increment to linear relation. In particular, selective reduced integration was adopted to formulate the stiffness matrix. The simulated geometries of verticality could clearly demonstrate the vertical processes until unloading. A series of experiments and simulations were performed to validate the formulation in the theory, leading to the development of the computer codes. The whole deformation history and the distribution of stress, strain and thickness during the forming process were obtained by carefully considering the moving boundary condition in the finite-element method. Therefore, this modeling can be used for judging whether a equilateral vertical steel can be shaped successfully. The present work may be expected to improve the understanding of the formation of the equilateral vertical steel.
Abstract: A new numerical method for simultaneously updating mass and stiffness matrices based on incomplete modal measured data is presented. By using the Kronecker product, all the variables that are to be modified can be found out and then can be updated directly. The optimal approximation mass matrix and stiffness matrix which satisfy the required eigenvalue equation and orthogonality condition are found under the Frobenius norm sense. The physical configuration of the analytical model is preserved and the updated model will exactly reproduce the modal measured data. The numerical example seems to indicate that the method is quite accurate and efficient.
Abstract: This paper presents nonlinear elastic dynamic analysis
of 3-D semi-rigid steel frames including geometric and connection
nonlinearities. The geometric nonlinearity is considered by using
stability functions and updating geometric stiffness matrix. The
nonlinear behavior of the steel beam-to-column connection is
considered by using a zero-length independent connection element
comprising of six translational and rotational springs. The nonlinear
dynamic equilibrium equations are solved by the Newmark numerical
integration method. The nonlinear time-history analysis results are
compared with those of previous studies and commercial SAP2000
software to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed
procedure.
Abstract: Many computational techniques were applied to
solution of heat conduction problem. Those techniques were the
finite difference (FD), finite element (FE) and recently meshless
methods. FE is commonly used in solution of equation of heat
conduction problem based on the summation of stiffness matrix of
elements and the solution of the final system of equations. Because
of summation process of finite element, convergence rate was
decreased. Hence in the present paper Cellular Automata (CA)
approach is presented for the solution of heat conduction problem.
Each cell considered as a fixed point in a regular grid lead to the
solution of a system of equations is substituted by discrete systems of
equations with small dimensions. Results show that CA can be used
for solution of heat conduction problem.
Abstract: This paper proposed a stiffness analysis method for a
3-PRS mechanism for welding thick aluminum plate using FSW
technology. In the molding process, elastic deformation of lead-screws
and links are taken into account. This method is based on the virtual
work principle. Through a survey of the commonly used stiffness
performance indices, the minimum and maximum eigenvalues of the
stiffness matrix are used to evaluate the stiffness of the 3-PRS
mechanism. Furthermore, A FEA model has been constructed to verify
the method. Finally, we redefined the workspace using the stiffness
analysis method.
