Abstract: Intersection is a critical area on a highway which is a place of conflict points and congestion due to the meeting of two or more roads. Conflicts that occur at the intersection include diverging, merging, weaving, and crossing. To deal with these conflicts, a crossing control system is needed, at a plot of intersection there are two control systems namely signal intersections and non-signalized intersections. The control system at a plot of intersection can affect the intersection performance. In Indonesia there are still many intersections with poor intersection performance. In analyzing the parameters to measure the performance of a plot of intersection in Indonesia, it is guided by the 1997 Indonesian Road Capacity Manual. For this reason, this study aims to develop laboratory diagnostics at plot intersections to analyze parameters that can affect the performance of an intersection. The research method used is research and development. The laboratory diagnosis includes anamnesis, differential diagnosis, inspection, diagnosis, prognosis, specimens, analysis and sample data analysts. It is expected that this research can encourage the development and application of laboratory diagnostics at a plot of intersection in Indonesia so that intersections can function optimally.
Abstract: Road performance and traffic safety are highly influenced by improper water drainage system performance, particularly within intersection areas. So, the aim of the presented paper is the evaluation of pervious concrete made with two types and two aggregate fractions for potential utilization in intersection drainage areas. Although the studied pervious concrete mixtures achieved proper drainage but lower strength characteristics, this pervious concrete has a good potential for enhancing pavement drainage systems if it is embedded on limited intersection areas.
Abstract: There is a call to ensure that the issues of safety and efficient throughput are considered during design; the solutions to these issues can also be retrofitted at locations where they were not captured during design, but have become problems to road users over time. This paper adopts several methods to analyze the performance of an intersection which was formerly a ‘priority-controlled’ intersection, but has now been converted to a ‘signal-controlled’ intersection. Extensive review of literature helped form the basis for result analysis and discussion. The Ikot-Ekpene/Anagha-Ezikpe intersection, located at the heart of Umuahia was adopted as case study; considering the high traffic volume on the route. Anecdotal evidence revealed that traffic signals imposed enormous delays at the intersection, especially for traffic on the major road. The major road has arrival flow which surpasses the saturation flow obtained from modelling of the isolated signalized intersection. Similarly, there were several geometric elements that did not agree with the specific function of the road. A roundabout, particularly flower roundabout was recommended as a better traffic control measure.
Abstract: In this paper, we are interested in the problem of
finding similar images in a large database. For this purpose we
propose a new algorithm based on a combination of the 2-D
histogram intersection in the HSV space and statistical moments. The
proposed histogram is based on a 3x3 window and not only on the
intensity of the pixel. This approach overcome the drawback of the
conventional 1-D histogram which is ignoring the spatial distribution
of pixels in the image, while the statistical moments are used to
escape the effects of the discretisation of the color space which is
intrinsic to the use of histograms. We compare the performance of
our new algorithm to various methods of the state of the art and we
show that it has several advantages. It is fast, consumes little memory
and requires no learning. To validate our results, we apply this
algorithm to search for similar images in different image databases.
Abstract: There are many drivers who feel right A pillar of Japanese right-hand-drive car preventing visibility on turning right or left at intersection. On the other hand, there is a report that almost pedestrian accident is caused by the delay of finding pedestrian by drivers and this is found by drivers’ eye movement. Thus, we developed the evaluation method of quantification using drivers’ eye movement data by least squares estimation and we applied this method to commercial vehicle and evaluation the visibility. It is suggested that visibility of vehicle can be quantified and estimated by linear model obtained from experimental eye fixation data and information of vehicle dimensions.
Abstract: Whit the increasing of traffic, noise emanated from
motor vehicles increases as well, which subsequently causes adding
to the stress of modern city. Thus, it is needed to look for most
critical areas in terms of environmental and social impact of noise.
There are several critical situations for noise emanated from motor
vehicles such as stop and go situation which usually occurs near
junctions or at-grade intersections. This study was conducted in two
locations, most common types of intersections, crossroads and Tjunctions.
The highest average noise levels are recorded during Go
phase for T-junction, 64.4 dB, and Drive phase for crossroad, 64 dB.
It implies that the existence of intersection caused the noise level to
increase. The vehicles starting to move produce more sound than
when they travel at a constant speed along the intersection. It is
suggested that special considerations and priority of allocating funds
should be given to these critical spots.
Abstract: This paper mainly studies the analyses of parameters
in the intersection collision avoidance (ICA) system based on the radar
sensors. The parameters include the positioning errors, the repeat
period of the radar sensor, the conditions of potential collisions of two
cross-path vehicles, etc. The analyses of the parameters can provide
the requirements, limitations, or specifications of this ICA system. In
these analyses, the positioning errors will be increased as the measured
vehicle approach the intersection. In addition, it is not necessary to
implement the radar sensor in higher position since the positioning
sensitivities become serious as the height of the radar sensor increases.
A concept of the safety buffer distances for front and rear of the
measured vehicle is also proposed. The conditions for potential
collisions of two cross-path vehicles are also presented to facilitate the
computation algorithm.
Abstract: Most of the collision warning systems currently
available in the automotive market are mainly designed to warn
against imminent rear-end and lane-changing collisions. No collision
warning system is commercially available to warn against imminent
turning collisions at intersections, especially for left-turn collisions
when a driver attempts to make a left-turn at either a signalized or
non-signalized intersection, conflicting with the path of other
approaching vehicles traveling on the opposite-direction traffic
stream. One of the major factors that lead to left-turn collisions is the
human error and misjudgment of the driver of the turning vehicle
when perceiving the speed and acceleration of other vehicles
traveling on the opposite-direction traffic stream; therefore, using a
properly-designed collision warning system will likely reduce, or
even eliminate, this type of collisions by reducing human error. This
paper introduces perceptual framework for a proposed collision
warning system that can detect imminent left-turn collisions at
intersections. The system utilizes a commercially-available detection
sensor (either a radar sensor or a laser detector) to detect approaching
vehicles traveling on the opposite-direction traffic stream and
calculate their speeds and acceleration rates to estimate the time-tocollision
and compare that time to the time required for the turning
vehicle to clear the intersection. When calculating the time required
for the turning vehicle to clear the intersection, consideration is given
to the perception-reaction time of the driver of the turning vehicle,
which is the time required by the driver to perceive the message
given by the warning system and react to it by engaging the throttle.
A regression model was developed to estimate perception-reaction
time based on age and gender of the driver of the host vehicle.
Desired acceleration rate selected by the driver of the turning vehicle,
when making the left-turn movement, is another human factor that is
considered by the system. Another regression model was developed
to estimate the acceleration rate selected by the driver of the turning
vehicle based on driver-s age and gender as well as on the location
and speed of the nearest approaching vehicle along with the
maximum acceleration rate provided by the mechanical
characteristics of the turning vehicle. By comparing time-to-collision
with the time required for the turning vehicle to clear the intersection,
the system displays a message to the driver of the turning vehicle
when departure is safe. An application example is provided to
illustrate the logic algorithm of the proposed system.
Abstract: Urban road network traffic has become one of the
most studied research topics in the last decades. This is mainly due to
the enlargement of the cities and the growing number of motor
vehicles traveling in this road network. One of the most sensitive
problems is to verify if the network is congestion-free. Another
related problem is the automatic reconfiguration of the network
without building new roads to alleviate congestions. These problems
require an accurate model of the traffic to determine the steady state
of the system. An alternative is to simulate the traffic to see if there
are congestions and when and where they occur. One key issue is to
find an adequate model for road intersections. Once the model
established, either a large scale model is built or the intersection is
represented by its performance measures and simulation for analysis.
In both cases, it is important to seek the queueing model to represent
the road intersection. In this paper, we propose to model the road
intersection as a BCMP queueing network and we compare this
analytical model against a simulation model for validation.
