Abstract: Motion estimation occupies the heaviest computation in HEVC (high efficiency video coding). Many fast algorithms such as TZS (test zone search) have been proposed to reduce the computation. Still the huge computation of the motion estimation is a critical issue in the implementation of HEVC video codec. In this paper, motion estimator architecture with optimized number of PEs (processing element) is presented by exploiting early termination. It also reduces hardware size by exploiting parallel processing. The presented motion estimator architecture has 8 PEs, and it can efficiently perform TZS with very high utilization of PEs.
Abstract: Real-time shadow generation in virtual environments
and Augmented Reality (AR) was always a hot topic in the last
three decades. Lots of calculation for shadow generation among AR
needs a fast algorithm to overcome this issue and to be capable of
implementing in any real-time rendering. In this paper, a silhouette
detection algorithm is presented to generate shadows for AR systems.
Δ+ algorithm is presented based on extending edges of occluders
to recognize which edges are silhouettes in the case of real-time
rendering. An accurate comparison between the proposed algorithm
and current algorithms in silhouette detection is done to show the
reduction calculation by presented algorithm. The algorithm is tested
in both virtual environments and AR systems. We think that this
algorithm has the potential to be a fundamental algorithm for shadow
generation in all complex environments.
Abstract: This paper presents feature level image fusion using Haar lifting wavelet transform. Feature fused is edge and boundary information, which is obtained using wavelet transform modulus maxima criteria. Simulation results show the superiority of the result as entropy, gradient, standard deviation are increased for fused image as compared to input images. The proposed methods have the advantages of simplicity of implementation, fast algorithm, perfect reconstruction, and reduced computational complexity. (Computational cost of Haar wavelet is very small as compared to other lifting wavelets.)
Abstract: Skew detection and correction (SDC) has a direct effect in efficiency and exactitude of documents’ segmentation and analysis and thus is considered as a very important step in documents’ analysis field. Skew is a major problem in documents’ analysis for every language. For Arabic/Persian document scripts this problem is more severe because of special features of these languages. In this paper an efficient and fast algorithm for Document Skew Detection (DSD) based on the concept of segmentation and Center of Gravity (COG) is proposed. This algorithm is examined for 150 Arabic/Persian and English documents and SDC process are done successfully for 93 percent of documents with error rate of less than 1°. This algorithm shows better results for English documents compared to Arabic/Persian documents. The proposed method is also represents favorable results for handwritten, printed and also complicated documents such as newspapers and journals even with very low quality and resolution.
Abstract: In this study, we present a new and fast algorithm for lung segmentation using CTA images. This process is quite important especially at lung vessel segmentation, detection of pulmonary emboly, finding nodules or segmentation of airways. Applied method has been carried out at four steps. At first step, images have been applied optimal threshold. At the second one, the subsegment vessels, which have a place in lung region and which are in small dimension, have been removed. At the third one, identifying and segmentation of lungs and airway edges have been carried out. Lastly, by throwing away the airway, lung segmentation has been presented.
Abstract: Prior research evidenced that unimodal biometric
systems have several tradeoffs like noisy data, intra-class variations,
restricted degrees of freedom, non-universality, spoof attacks, and
unacceptable error rates. In order for the biometric system to be more
secure and to provide high performance accuracy, more than one
form of biometrics are required. Hence, the need arise for multimodal
biometrics using combinations of different biometric modalities. This
paper introduces a multimodal biometric system (MMBS) based on
fusion of whole dorsal hand geometry and fingerprints that acquires
right and left (Rt/Lt) near-infra-red (NIR) dorsal hand geometry (HG)
shape and (Rt/Lt) index and ring fingerprints (FP). Database of 100
volunteers were acquired using the designed prototype. The acquired
images were found to have good quality for all features and patterns
extraction to all modalities. HG features based on the hand shape
anatomical landmarks were extracted. Robust and fast algorithms for
FP minutia points feature extraction and matching were used. Feature
vectors that belong to similar biometric traits were fused using
feature fusion methodologies. Scores obtained from different
biometric trait matchers were fused using the Min-Max
transformation-based score fusion technique. Final normalized scores
were merged using the sum of scores method to obtain a single
decision about the personal identity based on multiple independent
sources. High individuality of the fused traits and user acceptability
of the designed system along with its experimental high performance
biometric measures showed that this MMBS can be considered for
med-high security levels biometric identification purposes.
Abstract: In this paper, the construction of fast algorithms for the computation of Periodic Walsh Piecewise-Linear PWL transform and the Periodic Haar Piecewise-Linear PHL transform will be presented. Algorithms for the computation of the inverse transforms are also proposed. The matrix equation of the PWL and PHL transforms are introduced. Comparison of the computational requirements for the periodic piecewise-linear transforms and other orthogonal transforms shows that the periodic piecewise-linear transforms require less number of operations than some orthogonal transforms such as the Fourier, Walsh and the Discrete Cosine transforms.
Abstract: The background estimation approach using a small
window median filter is presented on the bases of analyzing IR point
target, noise and clutter model. After simplifying the two-dimensional
filter, a simple method of adopting one-dimensional median filter is
illustrated to make estimations of background according to the
characteristics of IR scanning system. The adaptive threshold is used
to segment canceled image in the background. Experimental results
show that the algorithm achieved good performance and satisfy the
requirement of big size image-s real-time processing.
Abstract: In this paper we present the algorithm which allows
us to have an object tracking close to real time in Full HD videos.
The frame rate (FR) of a video stream is considered to be between
5 and 30 frames per second. The real time track building will be
achieved if the algorithm can follow 5 or more frames per second. The
principle idea is to use fast algorithms when doing preprocessing to
obtain the key points and track them after. The procedure of matching
points during assignment is hardly dependent on the number of points.
Because of this we have to limit pointed number of points using the
most informative of them.
Abstract: This paper introduces a hand gesture recognition system to recognize real time gesture in unstrained environments. Efforts should be made to adapt computers to our natural means of communication: Speech and body language. A simple and fast algorithm using orientation histograms will be developed. It will recognize a subset of MAL static hand gestures. A pattern recognition system will be using a transforrn that converts an image into a feature vector, which will be compared with the feature vectors of a training set of gestures. The final system will be Perceptron implementation in MATLAB. This paper includes experiments of 33 hand postures and discusses the results. Experiments shows that the system can achieve a 90% recognition average rate and is suitable for real time applications.
Abstract: In this paper, a novel and fast algorithm for segmental
and subsegmental lung vessel segmentation is introduced using
Computed Tomography Angiography images. This process is quite
important especially at the detection of pulmonary embolism, lung
nodule, and interstitial lung disease. The applied method has been
realized at five steps. At the first step, lung segmentation is achieved.
At the second one, images are threshold and differences between the
images are detected. At the third one, left and right lungs are gathered
with the differences which are attained in the second step and Exact
Lung Image (ELI) is achieved. At the fourth one, image, which is
threshold for vessel, is gathered with the ELI. Lastly, identifying and
segmentation of segmental and subsegmental lung vessel have been
carried out thanks to image which is obtained in the fourth step. The
performance of the applied method is found quite well for
radiologists and it gives enough results to the surgeries medically.
Abstract: Facial features are frequently used to represent local
properties of a human face image in computer vision applications. In
this paper, we present a fast algorithm that can extract the facial
features online such that they can give a satisfying representation of a
face image. It includes one step for a coarse detection of each facial
feature by AdaBoost and another one to increase the accuracy of the
found points by Active Shape Models (ASM) in the regions of interest.
The resulted facial features are evaluated by matching with artificial
face models in the applications of physiognomy. The distance measure
between the features and those in the fate models from the database is
carried out by means of the Hausdorff distance. In the experiment, the
proposed method shows the efficient performance in facial feature
extractions and online system of physiognomy.
Abstract: We are concerned with a class of quadratic matrix
equations arising from the overdamped mass-spring system. By
exploring the structure of coefficient matrices, we propose a fast
cyclic reduction algorithm to calculate the extreme solutions of the
equation. Numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm
outperforms the original cyclic reduction and the structure-preserving
doubling algorithm.
Abstract: In this paper we present a novel method, which
reduces the computational complexity of abrupt cut detection. We
have proposed fast algorithm, where the similarity of frames within
defined step is evaluated instead of comparing successive frames.
Based on the results of simulation on large video collection, the
proposed fast algorithm is able to achieve 80% reduction of needed
frames comparisons compared to actually used methods without the
shot cut detection accuracy degradation.
Abstract: Recently, neural networks have shown good
results for detection of a certain pattern in a given image. In
our previous papers [1-5], a fast algorithm for pattern
detection using neural networks was presented. Such
algorithm was designed based on cross correlation in the
frequency domain between the input image and the weights
of neural networks. Image conversion into symmetric shape
was established so that fast neural networks can give the
same results as conventional neural networks. Another
configuration of symmetry was suggested in [3,4] to improve
the speed up ratio. In this paper, our previous algorithm for
fast neural networks is developed. The frequency domain
cross correlation is modified in order to compensate for the
symmetric condition which is required by the input image.
Two new ideas are introduced to modify the cross correlation
algorithm. Both methods accelerate the speed of the fast
neural networks as there is no need for converting the input
image into symmetric one as previous. Theoretical and
practical results show that both approaches provide faster
speed up ratio than the previous algorithm.
Abstract: In this study, a new and fast algorithm for Ascending
Aorta (AscA) and Descending Aorta (DesA) segmentation is
presented using Computed Tomography Angiography images. This
process is quite important especially at the detection of aortic
plaques, aneurysms, calcification or stenosis. The applied method has
been carried out at four steps. At first step, lung segmentation is
achieved. At the second one, Mediastinum Region (MR) is detected
to use in the segmentation. At the third one, images have been
applied optimal threshold and components which are outside of the
MR were removed. Lastly, identifying and segmentation of AscA and
DesA have been carried out. The performance of the applied method
is found quite well for radiologists and it gives enough results to the
surgeries medically.
