Abstract: Totalistic organizations include organizations that operate by playing a prominent role in the life of its members through embedding values and practices. The Church of Scientology (CoS) is an example of a religious totalistic organization and has recently garnered attention because of the questionable treatment of members by those with authority, particularly when members try to leave the Church. The purpose of this study was to analyze exit communication and evaluate the task and relational messages discussed on online discussion boards for individuals with a previous or current connection to the totalistic CoS. Using organizational exit phases and interaction process analysis (IPA), researchers coded 30 boards consisting of 14,179 thought units from the Exscn.net website. Findings report that all stages of exit were present, and post-exit surfaced most often. Posts indicated more tasks than relational messages, where individuals mainly provided orientation/information. After a discussion of the study’s contributions, limitations and directions for future research are explained.
Abstract: In a multilingual setting like Nigeria, the success of service encounters is enhanced by the use of a language that ensures the linguistic and persuasive demands of the interlocutors. This study examined motivations for code switching as a negotiation strategy in bank-hall desk service encounters in Ìbàdàn metropolis using Myers-Scotton’s exploration on markedness in language use. The data consisted of transcribed audio recording of bank-hall service encounters, and direct observation of bank interactions in two purposively sampled commercial banks in Ìbàdàn metropolis. The data was subjected to descriptive linguistic analysis using Myers Scotton’s Markedness Model. Findings reveal that code switching is frequently employed during different stages of service encounter: greeting, transaction and closing to fulfil relational, bargaining and referential functions. Bank staff and customers code switch to make unmarked, marked and explanatory choices. A strategy used to identify with customer’s cultural affiliation, close status gap, and appeal to begrudged customer; or as an explanatory choice with non-literate customers for ease of communication. Bankers select English to maintain customers’ perceptions of prestige which is retained or diverged from depending on their linguistic preference or ability. Yoruba is seen as an efficient negotiation strategy with both bankers and their customers, making choices within conversation to achieve desired conversational and functional aims.
Abstract: This paper describes a new method of unequal error
protection (UEP) for region of interest (ROI) with embedded zerotree
wavelet algorithm (EZW). ROI technique is important in applications
with different parts of importance. In ROI coding, a chosen ROI is
encoded with higher quality than the background (BG). Unequal
error protection of image is provided by different coding techniques.
In our proposed method, image is divided into two parts (ROI, BG)
that consist of more important bytes (MIB) and less important bytes
(LIB). The experimental results verify effectiveness of the design.
The results of our method demonstrate the comparison of the unequal
error protection (UEP) of image transmission with defined ROI and
the equal error protection (EEP) over multiple noisy channels.
Abstract: Flash memory has become an important storage device
in many embedded systems because of its high performance, low
power consumption and shock resistance. Multi-level cell (MLC) is
developed as an effective solution for reducing the cost and increasing
the storage density in recent years. However, most of flash file system
cannot handle the error correction sufficiently. To correct more errors
for MLC, we implement Reed-Solomon (RS) code to YAFFS, what is
widely used for flash-based file system. RS code has longer computing
time but the correcting ability is much higher than that of Hamming
code.
Abstract: In this paper we proposed multistage adaptive
ARQ/HARQ/HARQ scheme. This method combines pure ARQ
(Automatic Repeat reQuest) mode in low channel bit error rate and
hybrid ARQ method using two different Reed-Solomon codes in
middle and high error rate conditions. It follows, that our scheme has
three stages. The main goal is to increase number of states in adaptive
HARQ methods and be able to achieve maximum throughput for
every channel bit error rate. We will prove the proposal by
calculation and then with simulations in land mobile satellite channel
environment. Optimization of scheme system parameters is described
in order to maximize the throughput in the whole defined Signal-to-
Noise Ratio (SNR) range in selected channel environment.
