Abstract: This paper addresses the performance of antenna array beamforming on Chip-Interleaved Code Division Multiple Access (CI_CDMA) system based on Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) detector in aeronautical mobile radio channel. Multipath fading, Doppler shifts caused by the speed of the aircraft, and Multiple Access Interference (MAI) are the most important reasons that affect and reduce the performance of aeronautical system. In this paper we suggested the CI-CDMA with antenna array to combat this fading and improve the bit error rate (BER) performance. We further evaluate the performance of the proposed system in the four standard scenarios in aeronautical mobile radio channel.
Abstract: In mobile communication systems, performance and capacity are affected by multi-path fading, delay spread and Co-Channel Interference (CCI). For this reason Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and adaptive antenna array are used is required. The goal of the OFDM is to improve the system performance against Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI). An array of adaptive antennas has been employed to suppress CCI by spatial technique. To suppress CCI in OFDM systems two main schemes the pre-FFT and the post-FFT have been proposed. In this paper, through a system level simulation, the behavior of the pre-FFT and post-FFT beamformers for OFDM system has been investigated based on two algorithms namely, Least Mean Squares (LMS) and Recursive Least Squares (RLS). The performance of the system is also discussed in multipath fading channel system specified by 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE).
Abstract: Multicarrier transmission system such as Orthogonal
Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technique
for high bit rate transmission in wireless communication systems.
OFDM is a spectrally efficient modulation technique that can achieve
high speed data transmission over multipath fading channels without
the need for powerful equalization techniques. A major drawback
of OFDM is the high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) of the
transmit signal which can significantly impact the performance of the
power amplifier. In this paper we have compared the PAPR reduction
performance of Golay and Reed-Muller coded OFDM signal. From
our simulation it has been found that the PAPR reduction performance
of Golay coded OFDM is better than the Reed-Muller coded OFDM
signal. Moreover, for the optimum PAPR reduction performance, code
configuration for Golay and Reed-Muller codes has been identified.
Abstract: With the exponentially increasing demand for
wireless communications the capacity of current cellular systems will
soon become incapable of handling the growing traffic. Since radio
frequencies are diminishing natural resources, there seems to be a
fundamental barrier to further capacity increase. The solution can be
found in smart antenna systems.
Smart or adaptive antenna arrays consist of an array of antenna
elements with signal processing capability, that optimize the
radiation and reception of a desired signal, dynamically. Smart
antennas can place nulls in the direction of interferers via adaptive
updating of weights linked to each antenna element. They thus cancel
out most of the co-channel interference resulting in better quality of
reception and lower dropped calls. Smart antennas can also track the
user within a cell via direction of arrival algorithms. This implies that
they are more advantageous than other antenna systems. This paper
focuses on few issues about the smart antennas in mobile radio
networks.
Abstract: In this paper, a simple heuristic genetic algorithm is
used for Multistage Multiuser detection in fast fading environments.
Multipath channels, multiple access interference (MAI) and near far
effect cause the performance of the conventional detector to degrade.
Heuristic Genetic algorithms, a rapidly growing area of artificial
intelligence, uses evolutionary programming for initial search, which
not only helps to converge the solution towards near optimal
performance efficiently but also at a very low complexity as
compared with optimal detector. This holds true for Additive White
Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and multipath fading channels.
Experimental results are presented to show the superior performance
of the proposed techque over the existing methods.
Abstract: Multicarrier transmission system such as Orthogonal
Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technique
for high bit rate transmission in wireless communication system.
OFDM is a spectrally efficient modulation technique that can achieve
high speed data transmission over multipath fading channels without
the need for powerful equalization techniques. However the price
paid for this high spectral efficiency and less intensive equalization
is low power efficiency. OFDM signals are very sensitive to nonlinear
effects due to the high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR),
which leads to the power inefficiency in the RF section of the
transmitter. This paper investigates the effect of PAPR reduction on
the performance parameter of multicarrier communication system.
Performance parameters considered are power consumption of Power
Amplifier (PA) and Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC), power amplifier
efficiency, SNR of DAC and BER performance of the system.
From our analysis it is found that irrespective of PAPR reduction
technique being employed, the power consumption of PA and DAC
reduces and power amplifier efficiency increases due to reduction in
PAPR. Moreover, it has been shown that for a given BER performance
the requirement of Input-Backoff (IBO) reduces with reduction in
PAPR.
Abstract: This report aims to utilize existing and future Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Wireless Local Area Network (MIMO-OFDM WLAN) systems characteristics–such as multiple subcarriers, multiple antennas, and channel estimation characteristics–for indoor location estimation systems based on the Direction of Arrival (DOA) and Radio Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) methods. Hybrid of DOA-RSSI methods also evaluated. In the experimental data result, we show that location estimation accuracy performances can be increased by minimizing the multipath fading effect. This is done using multiple subcarrier frequencies over wideband frequencies to estimate one location. The proposed methods are analyzed in both a wide indoor environment and a typical room-sized office. In the experiments, WLAN terminal locations are estimated by measuring multiple subcarriers from arrays of three dipole antennas of access points (AP). This research demonstrates highly accurate, robust and hardware-free add-on software for indoor location estimations based on a MIMO-OFDM WLAN system.
Abstract: IEEE 802.15.4a impulse radio-time hopping ultra wide
band (IR-TH UWB) physical layer, due to small duty cycle and very
short pulse widths is robust against multipath propagation. However,
scattering and reflections with the large number of obstacles in indoor
channel environments, give rise to dense multipath fading. It imposes
serious problem to optimum Rake receiver architectures, for which
very large number of fingers are needed. Presence of strong noise
also affects the reception of fine pulses having extremely low power
spectral density. A robust SRake receiver for IEEE 802.15.4a IRTH
UWB in dense multipath and additive white Gaussian noise
(AWGN) is proposed to efficiently recover the weak signals with
much reduced complexity. It adaptively increases the signal to noise
(SNR) by decreasing noise through a recursive least square (RLS)
algorithm. For simulation, dense multipath environment of IEEE
802.15.4a industrial non line of sight (NLOS) is employed. The power
delay profile (PDF) and the cumulative distribution function (CDF)
for the respective channel environment are found. Moreover, the error
performance of the proposed architecture is evaluated in comparison
with conventional SRake and AWGN correlation receivers. The
simulation results indicate a substantial performance improvement
with very less number of Rake fingers.
Abstract: The major problem that wireless communication
systems undergo is multipath fading caused by scattering of the
transmitted signal. However, we can treat multipath propagation as
multiple channels between the transmitter and receiver to improve
the signal-to-scattering-noise ratio. While using Single Input
Multiple Output (SIMO) systems, the diversity receivers extract
multiple signal branches or copies of the same signal received from
different channels and apply gain combining schemes such as Root
Mean Square Gain Combining (RMSGC). RMSGC asymptotically
yields an identical performance to that of the theoretically optimal
Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) for values of mean Signal-to-
Noise-Ratio (SNR) above a certain threshold value without the need
for SNR estimation. This paper introduces an improvement of
RMSGC using two different issues. We found that post-detection and
de-noising the received signals improve the performance of RMSGC
and lower the threshold SNR.
Abstract: Support Vector Machine (SVM) is a recent class of statistical classification and regression techniques playing an increasing role in applications to detection problems in various engineering problems, notably in statistical signal processing, pattern recognition, image analysis, and communication systems. In this paper, SVM is applied to an infrared (IR) binary communication system with different types of channel models including Ricean multipath fading and partially developed scattering channel with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) at the receiver. The structure and performance of SVM in terms of the bit error rate (BER) metric is derived and simulated for these channel stochastic models and the computational complexity of the implementation, in terms of average computational time per bit, is also presented. The performance of SVM is then compared to classical binary signal maximum likelihood detection using a matched filter driven by On-Off keying (OOK) modulation. We found that the performance of SVM is superior to that of the traditional optimal detection schemes used in statistical communication, especially for very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) ranges. For large SNR, the performance of the SVM is similar to that of the classical detectors. The implication of these results is that SVM can prove very beneficial to IR communication systems that notoriously suffer from low SNR at the cost of increased computational complexity.
Abstract: We present a simplified equalization technique for a
π/4 differential quadrature phase shift keying ( π/4 -DQPSK) modulated
signal in a multipath fading environment. The proposed equalizer is
realized as a fractionally spaced adaptive decision feedback equalizer
(FS-ADFE), employing exponential step-size least mean square
(LMS) algorithm as the adaptation technique. The main advantage of
the scheme stems from the usage of exponential step-size LMS algorithm
in the equalizer, which achieves similar convergence behavior
as that of a recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm with significantly
reduced computational complexity. To investigate the finite-precision
performance of the proposed equalizer along with the π/4 -DQPSK
modem, the entire system is evaluated on a 16-bit fixed point digital
signal processor (DSP) environment. The proposed scheme is found
to be attractive even for those cases where equalization is to be
performed within a restricted number of training samples.
Abstract: Terminal localization for indoor Wireless Local Area
Networks (WLANs) is critical for the deployment of location-aware
computing inside of buildings. A major challenge is obtaining high
localization accuracy in presence of fluctuations of the received signal
strength (RSS) measurements caused by multipath fading. This paper
focuses on reducing the effect of the distance-varying noise by spatial
filtering of the measured RSS. Two different survey point geometries
are tested with the noise reduction technique: survey points arranged
in sets of clusters and survey points uniformly distributed over the
network area. The results show that the location accuracy improves
by 16% when the filter is used and by 18% when the filter is applied
to a clustered survey set as opposed to a straight-line survey set.
The estimated locations are within 2 m of the true location, which
indicates that clustering the survey points provides better localization
accuracy due to superior noise removal.
